Ngopini Sawit#9 - Protection of Remaining Natural Forest In Oil Palm Plantations

Background

Presidential Instruction No. 8/2018, commonly known as the Palm Oil Moratorium Presidential Instruction, will expire on 19 September 2021. However, many of the mandates in the presidential instruction remain unfulfilled, such as solutions for palm oil coverage and permits in forest areas. The same applies to the remaining natural forest coverage in palm oil permits.

However, a series of other relevant policies are still in place, such as the National Anti-Corruption Strategy, which includes the single map policy and the confirmation of forest areas as part of its action plan. The Single Map Policy has even become a separate presidential regulation. The National Land Agency is also discussing regulations on the issuance and control of plantation use rights.

The Indonesian palm oil industry is experiencing a crisis of confidence due to the deforestation it causes. Therefore, for the sake of the palm oil industry itself, it must be ensured that Indonesian palm oil is no longer a cause of deforestation. This means that the remaining natural forests within palm oil plantation concession areas must be protected and not converted.
