Plasma Oil Palm Plantation: Realities And Challenges

ngopini -
October 2021

The Indonesian palm oil industry cannot be separated from plasma palm. Although it does not contribute significantly to state income, plasma oil is directly enjoyed by the people as farmers. Unfortunately, the government's attention is not so great as to plantation companies, even though it has been mandated through Law no. 39 of 2014 concerning Plantations.

Law No. 39 of 2014 has mandated that plantation companies are obliged to facilitate the development of community plantations (plasma) in the vicinity of at least 20% of the total planted area. Unfortunately, the strategic position of the palm oil industry has not been able to encourage the fair involvement of oil palm farmers, as reflected for example in the fulfillment of the development of plasma oil palm plantations that have not been optimal.

At the end of 2018, the plasma area was only around 617,000 hectares. In fact, the area of ‚Äč‚Äčlarge oil palm plantations in 2018 was 8,507,462 hectares (Directorate General of Plantations, Ministry of Agriculture, 2020), should, if calculated roughly, the plasma area has reached 1,701,492 hectares. To encourage the growth of an inclusive palm oil industry, the policy for developing plasma oil palm plantations is important so that the development of oil palm plantations does not cause economic inequality, because the benefits of the palm oil industry can be enjoyed equitably by the community around oil palm plantations.

What is the reality of implementing the policy and what are the challenges? To answer this question, Auriga Nusantara held an online discussion on Ngopini Sawit #10: “Plasma Palm Oil Plantations: Realities and Challenges”.
